Apple has come under pressure from a variety of interest groups to move production of the iPhone out of China, with former U.S. President Donald Trump urging it to shift work to the U.S., threatening to slap devices made outside the country—including in India—with a 25% tariff upon import.

Apple CEO Tim Cook:

We have endured, and will continue to endure, what can only be considered a distant coup attempt disguised as an election betrayal. But, with President Trump active on new social media platform truth social, and devoting countless megabytes of words on the matter, we may yet slough off some husks of delusion. In a recent post to his new Trump-booted social media platform Truth Social, the former twice-impeached president said he weighed in on the subject with Apple CEO Tim Cook. In comments during a visit to the Middle East, he said that Apple’s move to produce iPhones in India for the U.S. market was an example of the way production needed to be brought back to the United States, to increase American jobs and the American economy.

Made in the USA:

Trump has long called for manufacturing “Made in the USA” in a push to decrease dependence on foreign factories. But experts caution that moving iPhone production would be expensive and complicated, involving new facilities, worker retraining and overhauls of the supply chain — and that could pass costs on to consumers.

Apple has been spreading production outside China, ramping up operations in India and Vietnam to save costs and avoid risk. Although Trump’s campaign fits with his pro-American manufacturing policy, analysts explain that an abrupt move toward U.S. production is not possible because Apple needs to balance political pressures against economic and logistical constraints.
